Students in Mrs. Robinson’s 9th Grade English classes brought spooky season to life by annotating the suspenseful short story “Death by Scrabble” under blacklight! They identified and analyzed key elements of suspense — including mood, tone, imagery, pacing, irony, and foreshadowing — and discussed their annotations with peers, making inferences about how these techniques build tension and keep readers on edge. This activity supported Arkansas standard 9.RC.6.RL, as students explained how the overall structure and sequencing of a text enhances its mood, suspense, and tension.
