LIFECHAMPS

Lavaca Middle School has been awarded a $2,500 Cox Charities Innovation in Education grant to support a new special education program called LifeCHAMPS: It’s Not Just School, It’s Life! The goal of the program is about (C) Creating (H) Habits to (A) Achieve and (M) Maintain (P) Positive (S) Socialization [CHAMPS]. With the implementation of the program students will learn to cook, set a food budget, use coupons, read recipes, make accurate measurements, and follow directions and kitchen safety rules. In addition, students will also learn about nutrition, hygiene, and be actively involved in socialization activities to encourage communication between peers. LifeCHAMPS will be of tremendous value to the students as they are taught age-appropriate social skills and competencies, including communication, problem solving, decision making, self-management, and peer relations. Field trips will be scheduled so that students can practice the skills they learn through interaction with others in a public setting, building confidence in their ability to perform household tasks. According to Meagan Thompson, Special Education teacher at Lavaca Middle School, “Participation in LifeCHAMPS will give students with special needs an opportunity to practice important life skills in a classroom setting while reinforcing positive social behavior.” If you have questions or would like more information on this program please contact Lavaca Middle School, 479-674-5618.
