LAVACA MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES $5,000 GRANT
Lowe’s Donates Money for a Greenhouse Project

We are thrilled to announce that Lowe’s has awarded Lavaca Middle School received a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for a greenhouse to enrich student learning and increase community involvement.  The greenhouse will enhance project-based learning and foster the importance of sustainable agriculture while helping their peers and community members to become healthier.  The project allows for a cross-curricular method of teaching connecting all subject areas.  Lavaca Middle School Principal, Kenny Holland stated, “Our students and community will greatly benefit from this grant.  We wish to thank our friends at Lowe’s for generously supporting this important project.”

The Arkansas School Recognition Program provides financial awards to public schools that experience high student performance and high student academic growth, which includes high school graduation rate comparisons for secondary schools.  The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) is pleased to announce funds have been made available for this recognition program.

LHS is being awarded $12,100 for being in the top 6%-10% for growth in the area of Graduation Rate.

Funds must be used for the following purposes: nonrecurring bonuses to the faculty and staff; nonrecurring expenditures for educational equipment or materials to assist in maintaining and improving student performance; or temporary personnel for the school to assist in maintaining and improving student performance.  A committee made up of the principal, a teacher elected by the faculty, and a parent representative selected by the local Parent Teacher Association or some other local parental involvement group shall determine how the funds will be used.

A proposal for the performance-based funding will be submitted to the ADE Monday, January 16 based on the committee recommendation.  The committee members are Felicia Owen, Principal; Becky Turney, Teacher; and Amy Green, Parent.
